St. Stephen Roman Catholic Church was built by the architectural firm of Cudell & Richardson. The parish at that time consisted of about 200 families. Parishioners mortgaged their own properties in order to raise the needed funds for construction. On November 20, 1881 Ret. Rev. Richard Gilmour, second Bishop of Cleveland dedicated St. Stephen Church with the interior completed just one week earlier. The church is built in cruciform style and is 165 feet long and 74 feet wide. The sidewalls are 40 feet high and are graced by beautiful stained glass windows. The interior height from floor to ceiling is 75 feet. All the altars and statues in the church are carved from oak wood by local artisans and were with a few exceptions were imported from Munich, Germany. Photos provided by Don Howe.
