Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Parish School Update
I know this has been a difficult time for so many people since the announcement of closing our parish school at the end of this school year. I am hopeful in this Easter Season that the Lord will continue to shine His grace on our parish in new ways. I write this in order to update everyone as we transition. I am glad to report that around two thirds of our current student body have already been welcomed by surrounding Catholic schools so that those who want to continue in Catholic education will be ready for next year.
This is inclusive of our catholic and non-Catholic students. For our catholic students, my hope and encouragement is that parents will continue your relationship with St. Paul parish in order that our young people will be a part of our community. Sacramental Preparation and other youth formation events or programs will continue here at St. Paul’s even if they are attending a neighboring school.
Some people ask me what will come of the school endowment since the school is closing. The endowment will continue being used for its intended purposes: for Catholic education and St. Paul’s parishioners. Therefore these monies will allow us to help foster Catholic Education for our parishioners. I want to repeat our pledge to continue financial support for our parishioners’ grade school children who attend a Catholic school. I again repeat that if anyone has questions or concerns please contract me at the rectory.
I also want to acknowledge that there are some who are very hurt by this decision or how it was made. The fact is that Bishop Perez has confirmed the decision to close the school. Some of this has been in the news media as well as the internet. I am sorry this has happened and for the way it has transpired. I know that there may be some who are still upset. This is understandable because of the great history and wonderful efforts of so many to make this school the beacon of light it has been. It is not easy when a loved institution comes to an end, but ninety-two years of a parish school is something to celebrate. Even though this particular school institution will end, the people who have been a part of it will carry on the mission. The parish will continue on its mission as well. We will form disciples of Christ in community and proclaim the Gospel, but in new ways. In our lives there are beginnings and endings, and with God’s grace new beginnings again.
While there is grief and sadness during this time, I am confident that we can rely more on the Lord who wants to lift us up and draw us together in deeper communion with Him and each other. It is cliche but true - when one door closes, God opens another one. I invite everyone to keep our eyes open to God’s open doors, and with faith we will walk through them together.
May God bless you!
Sincerely in Christ,
Fr. Pfeiffer
