Encouraging the Culture of Encounter with Jesus Christ,
His Church, and All People
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
O, Canada!
The time has come for my annual trip to Canada with my priest friends. Priests love their parishes, but time away is important to reconnect with the Lord and relax a bit. The beautiful surroundings, the peace and quiet, and priestly fellowship help me recharge the spiritual batteries. There will be a few different priests covering Masses here this weekend. Please know that while away I offer Mass every day and particularly pray for our parishioners. I do have access to internet up there, but only intermittently. Any emails, etc. I will most likely not respond until I return Aug 30.
Back to School
It is that time of year when many of our kids are venturing back to school. We pray that they all dedicate time to their studies and receive God’s gift of wisdom with thanksgiving. Some of our parishioners attend nearby Catholic schools. Some are educated through home-schooling programs, including co-ops. The past few years, our parish has become a center for a few of these groups, one of which begins this week, and a couple more should begin in September. May God bless all students and teachers this year.
Knowledge is not Power
Speaking of school, intellectual formation is very necessary for us as Christians in order to re-evangelize our culture. A false notion in our age is that “knowledge is power,” where “knowledge” usually means mere facts or a quick google search. True knowledge must always be seen in relation to God. It is a gift to be used for the common good. The gift of knowledge is not mere information, but a matter of formation. Even if our student days are over, this formation should never end. There is always more to learn. In particular, growing in knowledge of the faith helps to form our consciences and equips us for the mission God has for us to show ever more charity. So whatever level we are, in whatever model we use, may we come to the greater knowledge of God and share true knowledge with all.
Sincerely in Christ,
Fr. Pfr
