Encouraging the Culture of Encounter with Jesus Christ, His Church, and All People
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Prayerful Remembrance The events of September 11, 2001 are forever etched in our memory. I remember when I was in high school in the 1990’s my parents reflecting back on the day President Kennedy was assassinated. They described in great detail what they were doing and how they felt during the whole tragedy and its aftermath. I remember not having that kind of feeling. I had not lived through something like that – a national or world event that makes one pause and reflect so much that the memory stays for so long. Unfortunately, on 9/11 I finally had that experience and to this day, twenty-one years later, I still remember in detail how I received the news and the feelings of pain, confusion, and anger. But I also remember the consolations of that time, the moments of grace showing how God was still the one in charge. Even as terrorists thought they had their day, I remember the courage, heroism, and virtue on display in the midst of darkness. There was hope, sacrifice, and resurrection too. May we remember this anniversary always in the context of prayer asking God to shower his grace upon us and ask that our children now will not have a tragic event like that etched in their memories.
