Encouraging the Culture of Encounter with Jesus Christ, His Church, and All People
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Prayers after Mass - For Protection of Life October is Respect Life month, and we live in a world where the gift of life is actively threatened in many ways. Because the “Culture of death” has so infiltrated our culture, the temptation is to become numb to it or unconsciously (and even consciously) to avoid it in polite company. Sadly, this response is somewhat understandable due to the sheer magnitude of this evil. The reality overwhelms and paralyzes us; we do not want to admit that in our country, the land of the free, we have killed over 65 million innocent children. As if murdering babies weren’t enough, this evil abortion industry takes advantage of and abuses mothers. There are fathers as well who are robbed of their dignity. We may feel helpless but there is always hope, for nothing is impossible with God. To defeat this evil, we must take courage and act, but every good action should be rooted in prayer, so this month our prayers after Mass will include a special prayer for the protection of life. Stewards of the LandHonored Our parish has again received a Beautification Watch Award from the City of Akron and Keep Akron Beautiful. In a special way we thank our Stewards of the Land Ministry. This group coordinates the upkeep of the grotto, trimming of bushes, flowers, and all that goes into keeping our campus looking great. There are a group of core members, but there are times that volunteers from the whole parish come and assist (especially on mulch and trimming days) - thanks to all who have helped out. Let’s keep it up!
Speaking of Volunteers I am sure the Stewards of the Land could use more core volunteers. There are other ministries where you may be called to serve. Ushers are needed for all Masses. It is not necessary that an usher must commit to one Mass only. There is flexibility. It is open to men and women, and youth as well. We need people who can not only pass the offertory basket but be that friendly face of welcome to parishioners and visitors.
Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion This parish for many years has had a good number of people trained to be EMHC’s. Primarily they assist the priest and deacon in bringing Holy Communion to the sick and homebound. They can also assist in the distribution of Holy Communion at Mass when there is a need. I want to thank all those who have helped in this ministry. It is a sign of your love for our Eucharistic Lord and a sign of love for your fellow Catholics as you bring our Lord to those in need. When covid began, while I and the deacon would still visit folks, we suspended this ministry due to health concerns. As the situation has improved, we are including minsters to help the deacon and I visit the sick again. If you have been an EMHC in the past and want to assist again, please call the rectory and speak to Deacon John. Also, since covid, distribution of Communion at Mass is different. The most apparent change is that the Precious Blood in the chalice is no longer offered to the congregation. Thus, currently we do not need EMHC’s to assist at Masses. However, there are a few times when the deacon is not present and a EMHC may be needed. If you have been an EMHC in the past and are open to assisting please call Deacon John at the rectory. Thank you for your willingness to serve!
